“an opponent who deliberately prevents a free kick being taken quickly must be cautioned for delaying the restart of play.”

Above is the wording of the new law. Rice not only moves into Veltman’s path, he also nudged the ball out of Veltman’s way. He deliberately prevented the free kick being taken quickly; there is nothing to debate.
The guy was moving away from the ball, with a non-stationary ball (which means the free kick wasn’t even ready to be taken from our side), which he slightly nudged to the side.

I’m an Albion fan through and through, but you’re kidding yourself if you think there’s nothing to debate there.

He literally kicked the ball off the pitch. Not a little nudge.

Ref got it spot on, 2nd yellow. Rice knew exactly what he was doing, he f***ed around and found out essentially.

Arsenal fans play the victim card every time a decision goes against them, bringing up events from 15 years ago in their argument about the lack of consistency in refereeing. I can’t recall a manager I disliked as much as Arteta.

With all the ambiguity within the rules of the game these days i think the rule for kicking the ball away/holding the ball to slow progression should be made simple .

Once the Ref has blown , unless accidental , only the side awarded the ball should touch it otherwise it is a yellow .

Except Joao Pedro. Today. In the same game.
Do players always stop when they think the ball is out? Or sometimes do they play on and hope lino and ref missed it? Comparing the Pedro throw in when we were in position and when the ref has blown for a free kick and rice was out of position.

If Rice hadn't had slightly nudged the ball, Veltman would have kicked the ball, rather than Rice, thereby stopping a quick free kick from being taken.
Rice was a bit stupid, because if he hadn't have kicked the ball, and Veltman had hit the ball into him, the ref would have just made Veltman retake it and not cautioned Rice.

Rice is not very bright though, is he?

100% yellow for Rice. Might be "housery" or whatever but catching a player trying to stand over the ball or make him block a quick free kick to get him booked is not a new trick and it's always been a yellow for the opponent.

However I reckon Veltman could have pulled out of the kick, at least a little, once Rice knocked the ball away.

Although you couldn't find a player in football who I have less sympathy for!
