That may be true but does that make a difference? If Rice hadn't broken the rules it wouldn't have happened. Veltman was within his rights to play the free kick, it just so happens he opted to do so quickly.
Yes there's gamesmanship at play but nothing more serious than players 'winning' free kicks by going down softly when they could play on.
Rice knows the rules and knows he broke them, there's no surprise.

He barely moved the ball. And stuff like that happens minimum 3-4 times a game. He could’ve legitimately argued he just tried to knock it backwards to Veltman.
Anyway, it’s a difference of opinion. I get why the decision was made, but I don’t agree with it, and it leaves far too much to interpretation. And it could lead to a lot of games being turned by innocuous things like this.

Surely about 95% of refereeing is interpretation.
Tbh I would have just had a word and told them both to stop being knobs. No cards. Let’s face it it’s a soft yellow for Rice, not worth being a yellow for a sending off as players do it all the time. I’d be utterly raging if one of our players were sent off for that.
Veltman was more a yellow for me, but if I were letting Rice off I’d let him off as well. He didn’t actually make much contact with Rice anyway.

Absolutely. And the referee in this instance interpreted this one way, interpreted Joao’s kick away a different way. One led to a yellow that led to a red that left Arsenal 1-0 down. Inconsistency of interpretation.
As I said, if this was the other way around, we’d be furious.
I haven’t read the entire thread but why wasn’t Pedro given a yellow card for his version of kicking the ball away?

The ref got it spot on imo.
However, the shithousery from our Joel was magnificent. So good that the Arsenal supporters didn’t seem to notice - he was not booed at all after the incident.

Because the ball went into touch and we’ve now got multi ball, so an Arsenal player could have just taken a thrown in with another ball. Rice’s booking was for preventing us taking a quick free kick which the new rules this season are designed to clamp down on!
I thought Veltman would be carded but not a red so was horrified when red card came out but then wow Rice !! Presume ref joined brighton last gasp in transfer window!!!Anyone else initially assume the red card was for Veltman?
