Very good analysis.

Pedro and Milner as No.8s was fascinating as well as our wingers moving into striker positions as the full backs took their places.

The team has clearly been working very hard on these tactics. However, I can see profound competition for these dual No.8 positions very soon from the likes of Enciso, Sarmiento, Gruda, Ayari, Rutter and any potential new signings who are not centre backs!

The dull part of the south coast
It’s work in progress, obviously, but the first 15 minutes of the Everton game my heart was in my mouth. All the promise and expectation of pre-season was disappearing fast. I don’t know exactly when but we found our confidence and composure - and a goal - and turned everything around.

Everton as our first fixture was always going to be tough, their last season at Goodison, the Dyche factor, and us with a new coach and new players. The thing is we stuck at it, trusted each other, and our style of play reaped the rewards.

We will be the most unpredictable team in the league. Exciting? Definitely. What makes it so appealing? We always look as if we’ll score, and, concede! The club are showing a lot of ambition and matching it with signing quality players to fill those positions that were under strength last season. I’m trusting in FAB and the boys to deliver, and you know what, I think they just might.

Very similar thoughts. We gave the ball away more times in that first 20 minutes than via 4/5 games under De Zerbi. However, doing this seemed to encourage Everton and then once we won a transition we broke so quickly on them that we created chances with the turning point being the first goal.
What was impressive was that Dunk and JP seemed to work out that Everton were targeting/pressing Weiffer and so they started to pass to the full backs instead. Bypassed the Everton press a bit.
What is pleasing is that we got a good result which must give the players the confidence that Fabian’s ideas can work.

Thought this was good little review of the Everton match. Highlighting possible issues the developing system could have against United.

So looking at this line up, you'd think O'Neill in for Milner to give us more pace and energy. Ferdi for Veltman, again giving more dynamism. Estupinan (when fit) back for Hinshlewood.

Rutter for Welbeck maybe?

But where do the other newbies/last seasons starters fit? Does Gruda get a game? Enciso? Baleba? Adingra?

Just posted this to my what's app groups, it really is very good. I feel our defence will be a work in progress until we have completed the transfer window and had a few weeks once the new squad has bedded in.

I'd imagine Hurzeler will make adjustments for the United game saturday

So much credit to us here, both intelligently and energetically, covering most of what Man U tried to throw at us. Especially to Milner who seems to get slagged off so often for his slowness. Both he and Welbeck applauded for their fantastic positional sense, which is the mark of great senior pro's when your legs don't do what they used to. So pleased to have them in the squad and team; their nous is worth a lot to us!
