Every transfer thread that lasts more than a couple of pages eventually descends into an argument about the various merits or otherwise of varying journalists, usually Naylor or Romano.

People then chuck disparaging comments about people worshipping journalist a or b or some other form of idolatry.

I find it hard to believe that anyone cares that much but seemingly some people do. So, do you worship a journalist?

No journos. but as an Editor it is not possible to look past Mr Ian Hislop.

I don't know what will happen to Private Eye when he decides to retire...

Brilliant quote re his Christianity I've tried atheism and I can't stick at it: I keep having doubts

Yes, as someone writing and reading a lot, I'd say there's a couple - though "worship" is maybe not the right word.

Most of them are dead since at least 20 years, but there are a couple I hold in very high regard.
Simon Kuper for instance was a big inspiration to me when I started writing about football 24 years ago.

I definitely wouldn't say worship - especially not now because I think he's an insufferable bellend - but I learned a hell of a lot about the role of an editor from reading Piers Morgan's 'The Insider'.

Florian Plettenberg and David Ornstein both rate very highly for me for reliable transfer news.

Other than that, the only hero worshipped journalist for me was my Dad, now deceased, but a Fleet Street journalist for more than 25 years before becoming a publisher/writer.

Marina Hyde and John Crace are brilliant writers.
I really dislike them both, I’m afraid. They’re so up themselves they probably live in Lewes.

The most insightful proper political commentator IMO is Stephen Bush, ex-New Statesman, now FT.
