It doesn’t prove anything, but my son has lived in London for 5 or 6 years and was robbed/ mugged by 2 wa——s about 3 years ago, no knives involved , but nasty threats of violence if he didn’t hand over his phone, rucksack and wallet etc.
Not nice and pretty scary, so not everyone is ‘lucky’ in good old London Town.
,
Very sorry to hear that and I hope he recovered fully and quickly. But this can and does occasionally happen in any town throughout the country but still doesn't make a difference to the statistics relating to crime in London.

Certainly by the time I reached my son's age I had been involved in a far greater number of violent episodes than him and that was in that 'leafy middle class suburb' Brighton. And with one notable exception none of those made any statistics as getting threatened, a few punches and money or stuff nicked wasn't unusual for a Saturday night in town back then.

The one thing that the Mail / Express / Sun and Torygraph, along with GBeebies have in common is that they want their readers or viewers to be absolutely terrified. Pretty much all their income from people desperate to be scared into submission. It's truly astonishing.
Likewise, I am baffled by the insatiable appetite of (mainly elderly) people to read stuff which will frighten them!! It must significantly impact their mental health, and potentially places artificial restrictions on their enjoyment of life. For example I can imagine loads of retired Daily Mail and Torygraph readers who live in the home counties and avoid travelling to London (one of the world's most amazing cities) as a result of the crap they read in their newspapers. Oh well, their loss!

On another issue, I see the wibble brigade on Twitter get very very irate when mental illness is mentioned.
All the people who sarcastically cite 'mental health' when some awful things occur should watch last nights Panorama

I’ve lived in London for over 30 years and never had an issue. Yet I know plenty of people that have unfortunately. It may be because of my appearance I normally get searched at airport security when I go on holiday for no apparent reason it actually pisses me off.
I’ve had one dodgy moment when a late call out was fake and luckily I sussed something was up and never went in the property.

"A man has been jailed after assaulting a female police officer and attacking another man at a counter-protest in Brighton.

Ian Ward, 53, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with affray, assault by beating of an emergency worker, and assault by beating.

He has been jailed for 16 months at Hove Crown Court.

Judge Christine Henson says the case "couldn't be viewed in isolation" given the circumstances of unrest across the UK, adding "only an immediate custodial sentence" would suffice."

The prosecution said Ward was part of the 1,000-strong counter-demonstration which had been organised in Brighton in response to recent unrest.

The court was told that as Ward approached a line of police officers, he punched one demonstrator in the face and pushed one of the officers.

Ward was one of nine men arrested by Sussex Police in connection with recent protests in the region.

The court was told that Ward had spat at a police officer in 2023."

He's American. He's probably never heard of Manchester.

Biden is a white "Christian" - did that mean Trump was polite and kind to him?
Biden was his direct opponent.

Funnily enough, now it's Harris he's all over her ethinicity and background.

"“Is she Indian or is she Black?” Trump said, falsely claiming his political rival for the presidency “happened to turn Black” a few years ago."

Oh do actually FCUK off

I spent 6 months on NSC posting all the humanitarian reasons why I am most definitely NOT “pro-Israel’ (if you meant by that I support the netanyahu government’s actions in Gaza) 😡

Otherwise I‘ll just take it you are attacking me because I’m Jewish.

So then - What an utterly wanky thing to say that I have no right to post an opinion about crime in the UK because I’m Jewish.

My post was an ironic reference to Britains export of thousands of criminals to Australia in the 1800s you moron

Ps I’ll ask you not to drag “that” ME topic into an unrelated thread too just to troll me - I and several mods are sick of people using the issue across the board to troll people and for political pointscoring
ok , so we can all have a dig ..?? or can't we ..? i read a lot of your posts re Gaza and i agreed with a lot of it , i believe we had direct discussions on the issue , you claim higher moral ground because you're Jewish ( i had no idea) won't wash with me mate , quite happy to waste an hour on here , debating with people who are up for it , other than that it's a football forum primarily here to discuss BHA but there seem to be an increasing amount of thought police waving there sausages about and i can't wait for the football to start again.

It wasn’t just a dig - you suggested I had no right to make a light hearted comment on a thread about crime in the UK because I’m Jewish - therefore ‘must be “pro-Israel”’ You did know I was Jewish, we have discussed it elsewhere so don’t gaslight me mate.

The bit in bold - sounds like a double down with an antisemitic trope to me - I do nothing of the sort - if anything, I shrink from that, especially recently.

Best to leave it there Sydney

I have no ruck with you so tilt your alcohol driven lances at other windmills and some poor sod that doesn’t have a clue what you are going on about and you may get away with it.

UTA 👍

He’s fine now thanks, but perhaps rather more careful and aware of what may or may not be going on around him, which is no bad thing.
I have probably been a lucky fellow and have never really been involved in any nasty confrontations (although at 76, I may have forgotten😉) One or two words have been said in pubs on occasion, but nothing too bad.
The only time I have been assaulted was when I was in my late 20’s I think, and it happened whilst I was walking through the shopping arcade in Bognor minding my own business. Suddenly, I got a slap around the chops from some fellow who just ignored me and continued on his way, muttering obscenities and wildly gesticulating as he went. Clearly, he had mental health problems and that was that! No harm done.
Rough old place was Brighton in your younger days😁

Good to hear.

Brighton was a bit rough in the 70s/80s, but was way rougher before my time with the racecourse, slums and razor gangs 😲

And, despite what certain media may be trying to do to scare their readership into not going out, the simple fact is that the vast majority of violence in Britain takes place between males aged 18-25, same as it always has going back generations. Hopefully your son is now beyond that particular demographic

A classless response for getting called out on your bullshit.

I though better of you to be honest.

Unfortunately, the right leaning press will continue to gaslight the gullible, with misleading or cherry-picked statistics, and with deliberately confusing presentation of genuine statistics.

Look at this absolute shambles of a graph from today's Mail - actually showing a flat line in the murder rate, but presented to look like a huge year on year increase:

^these are a rubbish way of representing data.

Yes, Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock.
‘The boy’, as he is sometimes referred to by us is now 30 and is getting married to a lovely girl up in Newcastle next year.

anti-Khan racism? Are there really that many people who fill their posts with bile about Khan, Sunak, and any other dark-skinned politician? Or are more of the anti-Khan posts because they don't like his politics, with little to do with the colour of his skin?

Can you post a link to these stats?

As I said, many non Londoners do have an odd obsession with the Mayor.

The foreign aid budget to the extent one exists is simply British taxpayers money; given the level of debt this country is in its just as accurate to suggest that the budget is part of the interminable debt burden British taxpayers are locked into, therefore ANY money spaffed abroad (whether in Ukraine, or some other shithole) is evidently not an economic benefit to the British taxpayer, like a tax cut would be.

Put another way, to cut aid to British pensioners whilst continuing lavish money on people who have arrived and not put a bean in the pot is politically stupid or maybe it’s a deliberate sign of who the Labour Party cares most about.
We have an obligation in law to spend a minimum of 0.5% of GNI on foreign aid, and a target spend of 0.7% to satisfy international agreement via the UN. It isn't a choice, its an obligation. This was made law in 2015, not last month when Labour took over.

Yes, the obligation is a requirement of being in the United Nations.

It does make me chuckle that all of a sudden, everyone cares about 'poor' pensioners. Nobody was bothered about them until July.
The poor pensioners will still get their Winter Fuel Allowance, but the better off won't.
