I just don’t think he has the athleticism we need in that position to recover the ball when sides against us win it and attack us. Something Caicedo and Bissouma were brilliant at. And he’s not progressive enough to be the ‘Mac Allister’ role. If the plan is Weiffer / Baleba / Yalcouye in the DM role and then to bring in a Mac Allister replacement (Gruda ideally), I’m happy with that

Think he will do really well in Italy but I’d be disappointed if he does move. Still young and improving, will be Napoli’s gain

But that's my point, Billy shouldn't be playing there. He offered very little defensive cover and no offensive threat.

He takes the spot because we were short of better suited players.

It looks like the club are actively trying to resolve that, and yet some think he shouldn't be replaced.

Seriously, if Hurzeler doesn't want him, we'd still be seriously selling ourselves short if we just knocked the "1" off the front of that.

Not a love in, but I do think some are ignoring what he does bring to our midfield & the role he played in RDZ’s tactics. This coming season he may not be relied upon as much as now we have potentially upgraded with Weiffer, there may be others joining, & a new manager with different tactics is in place. & so we may sell.. but it will not be because he’s suddenly rubbish. Last year he was a crucial cog in our style of play. The goals/assist stat is a pointless comment, it simply wasn’t his job within the tactics to be involved in the final 3rd.

When he was injured last season we were all over the place Baleba wasn’t ready and made a hatrick of assists to the opposition if not more.

I'm getting a seagull tattoo if he's sold for £12m or less. We'll get at least £25m, which is still cheaper than the £50m they should pay.

Just to clarify:

If it's 12m plus add ons does that count as 12m or more? What if the add ons aren't reached?

Likewise what if it's say 10m plus an extra 3 with add ons?

It's best to sort these issues now so there's no ambiguity.

It's interesting you say that about the role he played in RDZ's tactics because I actually struggled with a part of Gilmore's game last season , that I couldn't get my head around. And just to say, I don't dislike Gilmore, this is purely an observation.

In RDZ’s first season, there were tactical analysis videos doing the rounds about how the albion would play through the press. The fundamentals consisted of the defenders putting their foot on the ball and baiting the press. A midfielder would drop back which would cause an opposition player to follow him, and in turn this would create a hole in opposition lines. The defender with the ball could pass to the other center back who could then pass through the hole. Or the defender could pass to the midfielder who'd dropped back and they would quickly pass through the hole. Essentially, it was cornerstone movement of that first season and we did it every game repeatedly.
Largely it was Caicedo who did this job, but also Mac Allister.

When they both departed, I was interested to see how we'd cope. But I don't remember seeing Gilmore do this job once last season. In fairness I don't think anyone did. I was particularly struck by how we played more direct balls, particularly early last year. And that's what I struggled with. Was that a deliberate change in tactics from RDZ? Or was the change in the way we played dictated by the players available. Was Gilmore not doing that job because he didn't understand it, or had he been told not to? I genuinely can't decide and I think we could only know the answer if we know what RDZ told the players last year.

I thought a lot of teams worked RdZ out in his second season. Attackers wouldn't be baited and cut off the angles for the simple pass to the free, deeplying midfielder.

That led to way more sideways passing and slower build ups.

I agree teams did work out how to play us last year. But we did this right from the off last year.
It was like we preempted them working us out. I remember watching the Vallecano friendly and being concerned that no one from our midfield was dropping back.
