Ban tourists, perhaps. Hotels could be converted into apartments fairly easily, and provide a lot more homes than if we aim only at banning those tourists who like self-catering.
Ban tourists, a silly reply.

If you want a cheap self-catering holiday then I’m sure it can be found if you look. Unfortunately you do not have a right to this in any destination you choose, which is what your posts suggest.

AirBnBs have had a significant and negative impact in many ways, from over populating previously residential areas with tourists, removing property from residential sector, noise and waste to not being declared and subsequent lost taxes. Regulation is happening around the world and it needs to happen in the UK.

As aside, I traveled the world as a youngster, this was the pre-AirBnB era, and I could always find cheap hotel, guest house style accommodation if I looked and was willing to compromise on time of the year and location etc. I’m sure this is still the case. In fact I know it’s still the case.

For the record I am a huge supporter of travel, whether this be domestic or foreign, it should be encouraged….but a balance needs to be struck with residents.

Exactly.

What's more, just be a bit more discerning in your choice of destination rather than following the crowd, especially during high season.

I rented an apartment for a weekend in a small Spanish coastal town earlier this year for 65 euros a night. Split between the 6 of us, so under 11€ each per night. No chants of "guiris go home" and no water pistols either :lolol:

If we were still in the EU, we would make the residents of these places go and live in Crawley for a few months, then they would start to appreciate what they have.

Silly Sausages.

That's the fundamental difference between us. I think holidays a are matter between me and my provider, you think holidays are a matter for the government to allow or deny under licence.

If there are not enough houses in Upton-on-Severn, where we have just been, then they should build more. Cheap ones. Cut back on the frills. That way there would be houses in Upton available for the less well off of the locals, while also ensuring that those of us who don't live in Upton can still enjoy the place now and then.

I'm not really sure where to begin with this. I'm not even sure I can be bothered to properly respond. If someone else wants to a go please do.

Sadly, a socialist perspective will always result in the 'haves' having to give ground to the 'have nots'... I will choose to holiday where I want, the money I spend in those areas benefits all the locals... stop proposing a govt control of my private life, start proposing more sustainable local house building policies...

Ah - more houses, cheap ones. Ideal for people with a bit more money to spare to buy to rent out or use for Air B&B. :(

Do yo wear slip-ons shoes because laces are a bit too much?

I think the fundamental difference between you and those who disagree with you is that you are completely unable to empathise with others or understand the effects of overtourism.

It's not just about economics. Plenty of well-off people are unhappy with their cities being turned into theme parks.

The dull part of the south coast
Amsterdam is also turning against tourists but for different reasons….mainly just the sheer volume of them.
We went to Venice in January (!) to celebrate Mrs.Punal’s birthday. It was rammed, so God knows what it must be like in the height of summer. Anyway, it was very enjoyable but I never saw the dwarf in the red coat.

If there aren't enough houses for the uses people want to put them to, then "build more" is a better solution than "stop people using them for what they want".

What about cities where new housing cannot be built? I'll use my neighbourhood as an example, there is literally nowhere you can build now. We have plenty of hotels and guest houses in the area, but AirBnB really took off and took of in a bad way forcing rents and houseprices up as individuals sort property to let to visitors. There is also the issue of sheer volume of people, sometimes multiple people squeeze into an apartment only really habitable for 2 and the nuisance this causes. I'm also not totally convinced about your money argument, residents where I live spend money....you're just swopping one lot of people's money for another... unless they are multiple occupants as I mentioned before. It is also unfair on hotels and guest houses which have to comply to various rules and regulations whereas AirBnB do not...or did not until legislation came in.

I stated earlier I have nothing against AirBnB, just that it got out of control and some regulation is needed to provide some balance between hotels, guest houses, AirBnB and residents. You want to let your apartment out periodically fine, go ahead. You want to become a professional AirBnBer I feel it is only fair you have to comply to similar rules and regulations as other professionals in the sector do....and that does involve some control of how many AirBnB permits are given out.

I have seen the before and after of AirBnB legislation and know what I prefer.
