In UK for 10 days from Indonesia and meeting a friend in Hove for a few pints. Looking for a quiet pub with good real ale, preferably Harvey's. Any recommendations?

Twen…..(checks notes), twenty five years ago Mrs GB and I had our first flat near there. Used to split most Sundays between the Robin Hood and Lion and Lobster, as did a certain Mark Williams.
RH was always a cracking boozer. I think it was there that latterly had a pub quiz that included a making something obscene out of plasticine round.

imho Hove Place is more like a restaurant than a pub. Robin Hood if i were you.

They still do the quiz night on Mondays with the plasticine round. Great pub quiz.

This is a good shout, only came across it recently. Old school boozer.
I had some fun in this pub, and The Farm, back in the day. I think it was The Coopers which had DJs at the weekend. Good times.
Chris (quizmaster and landlord) can often be found at the Amex, even though he's an Oxford fan by accident of birth and a Liverpool fan by accident of age.
Anna (landlady) is a Man U fan but other than that she's lovely. She used to work in the Biscuit Factory/The Wick in the early 2000s and Chris used to run the Chequers on Preston St for though reminiscing about that era).
The Farm and Coopers Cask.
Used the Cask a bit. Could get bonkers in there.
Was more a fan of The Farm. Spent many a drunken night in there when Garf was running it.
Maybe 10 years ago or so.
That was my last period of boozing it up and partying. My last hurrah.

Was just about to mention the Wick, a real spit and sawdust old fashioned boozer about ten years ago when l used to visit it semi regularly. Wasn't sure even if it was stilll there.The Wickproper pub
Wasn't it famous for the wrong reasons back in the 1970's or so, because someone was murdered there? or have l got that completely a*** about face? Probably the latter.
I think someone got shot there.
in 96 a student was murdered in Palmeria Square after we lost to Germany.
As for the pub itself if you are going on a friday or saturday night its very likely to be pretty busy and not the place for a nice quiet pint. Better options suggested above but if you are looking for something a bit more lively a good place to go.

Ah thanks for putting me right, l wasn't completely wrong, but l thought for some misguided reason it was the landord or landlady that was the victim.
On 3 September 1991 a 49-year old man walked into the Wick and finding the man he sought sitting next to a 26-year old blonde, he fired a revolver at his head. The blonde had previously lived with the victim for four years but at that juncture was the assailant’s fiancée. The victim was taken to Hurstwood Park for treatment and left hospital on 8 October 1991. He recovered but he was left with some shreds of bone and bullet still lodged in his brain. Meanwhile, the assailant fled the country but on 23 March 1994 he was extradited from Spain. His trial took place at Lewes Crown Court in late February / early March. On 4 March the jury stated they had failed to reach a verdict. The re-trial took place in July 1995 and he was jailed for 5 ½ years.

My first owned flat was in Norfolk Square 35 years ago - The Robin Hood - yes quiz night (with David Potter I think) and the Lion and Lobster were our weekend locals so probably just missed you by a few years.
The best local when I moved into central Hove also tucked away in a backstreet that only the locals knew about (aren’t they always the best pubs?) was the Stirling Arms in Stirling Place - our noisy Friday Night pub for live music and great beer, then back there for Sunday lunch with the Sunday morning football crowd.

That swung it from Hove Place to Robin Hood, so thanks. for that. After a rather sterile pint in The Wick, we went on to Robin Hood, stayed there all evening and consumed a lot of Harvey's. We loved the local boozer atmosphere and the beer of course and will be back.

Agreed. I live on grand ave and so my nearest are Blind busker and Hove place which are ok but I think the ones you mention have much more character about them. We are very lucky to have such nice boozers nearby.
