Why just one particular footballer’s name though? If the issue was with the mispronunciation of multiple footballers’ names then he may have been justified in his/her/their opinion, but for that soul grammatical faux pass, I’m out.

Sorry, but that joke does not work. The premise of the joke is that people pronounce the names incorrectly whereas your reply, in order to facilitate the humour, involves pronouncing the name correctly. It's not a joke about people not liking abbreviated replies. I am also out.
