20 years ago we stayed at the actual Pennsylvania and it's phone number was still 6-500. Proper grotty and stank of must.
I’ve walked from Battery Park to Harlem a few times - if you’ve got the time it’s fascinating and a great way to see a lot of the city.
Includes the transformed Meatpacking district, also The High Line and Hudson Yards. Loved that walk.
Just don’t tell the locals you’ve done it.

Yep, obesity and non physicality is a thing.
We don’t have your long distance running background. But on each day of each NYC trip we did > 20k steps, unplanned. Despite maximising use of Subway metro cards …. the boroughs are huge and unlike London, the subway is less comprehensive in its coverage. Got my wife and daughter into new New Balance fresh foam trainers …. aches and pains disappeared.

We loved looking around, including often tourist devoid areas … Harlem, Columbia Uni, Upper East, Lower East, a 17th Century area on Staten Island. So much to do on top of the great sights.

No exaggeration, it took about six months for the base of my spine to stop aching after I’d done a week in NYLegs took a battering
We got back in mid April, I took the rest of April off from all forms of exercise/walking.
I absolutely love walking in cities wherever it's feasible and NYC is no exception.
I did a similar walk with the missus - we got the subway to Central Park North and then walked to Grimaldi's for a lunchtime pizza just over the bridge in Brooklyn. We then walked back to our hotel near the tenement museum and the barman there thought we were nuts when he asked what we'd been up to!

Lol.. I once walked from the Ground Zero area Manhattan to Prospect Park in Brooklyn..... in flip flops..... ouch, I needed a beer after that.
We visited twice, doing 4 tours of different eras. Brilliant place.

Been to NYC and stayed in the Hampton Inn, W 39th. Small with lots of levels but just 2 lifts, spent ages waiting every morning.
But the subway is great and easy to use. We used a tourist bus just to get around easier. Best bet is find a hotel near a subway stop and also near a tourist bus stop.
Have fun, we found it a bit overwhelming though.

In terms of hotels I’d avoid mid town. Try sonething a bit quirky in TriBeCa or in the east village.

One thing to watch, NYC Hotels are bringing in Vegas style resort fees on mass now, $30-$40 a night in some places
